Photoshop's New AI Harmonize Feature

How to seamlessly blend any object into any background

Photoshop's new beta feature automatically adjusts lighting, colors, shadows, and details to make any object look like it naturally belongs in your chosen background scene.

Who is this useful for:

  • Graphic designers creating realistic composite images

  • E-commerce businesses showcasing products in different environments

  • Content creators making eye-catching social media visuals

  • Photographers wanting to place subjects in impossible locations

STEP 1: Set Up Your Background Scene

To start, you can download the Creative Cloud clicking here: https://www.adobe.com/campaign/creative-cloud.

Open Photoshop (beta) and load the background image where you want to place your object. This could be anything from a cozy living room to a dramatic mountain landscape. Make sure your background image is high-quality since this will serve as the foundation for your final composite.

Note: You'll need access to Photoshop (beta) to use this feature, which is currently available for testing and feedback.

STEP 2: Add Your Object to the Scene

Import the object you want to blend into your scene by adding it as a new layer. This could be a product, person, animal, or any other element you want to integrate seamlessly into your background.

If your object image includes its original background, don't worry - Photoshop can handle this automatically.

STEP 3: Remove the Original Background

With your object layer selected, look for the Contextual Task Bar that appears. Click Remove background to automatically isolate your object from its original environment. Photoshop's AI will intelligently detect the edges and create a clean cutout.

This step ensures your object is ready for seamless integration without any unwanted background elements interfering with the final result.

STEP 4: Position and Resize Your Object

In the Layers panel, select the pixel layer of your object image. Use the transform tools to adjust the size and position of your object within the background scene. Consider the perspective and scale to make the placement look natural and believable.

Take your time with this step - proper positioning is crucial for a realistic final result.

STEP 5: Apply Automatic Harmonization

Here's where the magic happens. With your object layer selected, click Harmonize in the Contextual Task Bar. Photoshop will present you with several variations that automatically adjust the lighting, colors, shadows, and details to match your background perfectly.

Choose the variation that looks most natural to you. The AI will generate the results in a new layer, preserving your original work and giving you the flexibility to make further adjustments if needed.

Pro tip: Experiment with different object placements before harmonizing. The AI works best when objects are positioned logically within the scene's perspective and lighting conditions.
